ISIL is the International Standard Identifier for Libraries and Related Organisations. It ensures that each institution can be uniquely and consistently identified worldwide, which is particularly important in the context of the global networking of libraries and cultural institutions.
Each ISIL begins with a country prefix (e.g. DE-). For museums, the suffix -MUS- is used, while packages of electronic resources often begin with ZDB-.
